I made this heart trivet for my wife last year...after Valentine's Day.

I think I will try this design this weekend, One question what finish do you use that will stand up if my wife puts a hot pan on it ?

Since I have a cnc, I just figure that I'll make a replacement when a trivet wears out. As a result, I don't usually apply any finish. None of the trivets have been destroyed yet. I have tried a drying oil (like Watco) with no problem. I just don't know if it's necessary. We'll keep researching.
I think that I tried a salad bowl finish on the Valentine trivet when I made it a year ago. I can't give much of a report on that one though, because my Wife doesn't want to risk damaging it...

Last night I decided to try making Bob's Trivet, It was a wake up for this new guy. I had a piece of cherry left over and figured I would use it to make a trivet for my wife. My board was a little narrower than the file Bob was generous enough to share, I thought no problem I will just resize it and cut away, Next I found I do not have an 1/8" end mill, no problem I have a 3/16", 1/16" can't make that big a difference....... Thankfully I stayed in the garage as the machine was working because on the last profile 2 cut as the bit was moving toward the Pocket cut heart I found out how much of a difference 1/16" can make, It snapped the heart out of the project....gottcha #1---Lesson learned.
Boy a loose piece of wood in a moving CNC makes a lot of noise!

So I remove every other profile2 cut and try to salvage my project so I have something for my wife on Valentines day, The first 2 cuts went great, 3 profile not so much, for some reason the right side of the cut was off the board on the top right of the heart, I must have screwed up the resize and it did not notice it in the preview. Resized again I start profile 3 cut and it stays on the board Yeah !

I then edited profile2 again to try and salvage the first piece.

I learned a lot last night! #1 walk away if you are tired
#2 do not try and rush a project without checking every setting !

Nice job on your trivets. No trashing at all there. you have set a real nice example of creative cnc work. It's the problem solving part of working on a project, where the learning really happens!
Your words of advice are also very valuable.

You learned 2 important lessons...without injury

AND you wound up with 2 usable trivets with a little "Creative" sanding
I kinda like the bottom "Custom" cut style better!
