The Gentleman's Valet Box

Post by sobfu »

Weekend woodworker for many years but fairly new to CNC work so I have still got the apprentice label for a while yet.
I liked the look of the Valet box and was keen to to see if I could make it, the first attempt worked well as I made it solely out of Jarrah and that now sits on my bedside table.
Thanks to the Vectric team for the files and plans, this was the first box I have made on the CNC and I loved the way it all fits together.
I made another one as thank you gift and this time used Victorian Ash but made the mistake of not checking how well Victorian Ash carves and it didn't work out too well.
I liked the color of the Ash so I carved the compass out of Jarrah and inlaid it into the Ash Top, the name badge is a small piece of Jarrah Burl.
I finished it with Osmo Oil.

Jarrah is a dark red hardwood that is native to the south western part of Australia, its pretty tough with a fine grain so is carves well.

Thanks Michael the CNC has been a steep learning curve but I am loving the accuracy that it provides, the accuracy of the box fit was great but I added Butt Hinges manually instead of machining on the CNC which didn't turn out too great. Next time I will attempt the hinge rebates on the CNC or maybe use barrel hinges.
