Progress Report 10/01/2020

Since the prototype of the Monte Carlo Stock is going well I have decided to start the design stages for the ThumbHole SKS Stock.

This is what I have so far:

Contours are taking shape but still a long ways to go before satisfactory contours are achieved.

Shark,
Am I correct this is the second completely carved proto?
Working on 3 different at once would tax my 3 working brain cells! :)
(and my patience:)

How does it feel?
Congrats!!

(still waiting to see how Thumbhole carves and feels! :)

Yes, you are correct!
The first was a full board carved and I found that fixturing for carving the internal areas was a bit tasking and complicated.

The second is where the stock is made/designed as to halves which will be laminated together. That was all for the Monte Carlo Stock design. With the laminated design I found to be a lot easier and I am not needing any special fixturing to complete it. Though I did find out while carving that I have to plan better for clearance on the cuts it was either that or reverse directions of the contoured carvings. They were starting awfully deep into virgin material. The simulation does show this but you really have to pay attention closely to it in order to see and understand it. Now that this is complete I am presently looking for material stock in which the two halves will complement each other. This is important when laminating two halves together. In fact, I am looking for material stock where it can be cut in half and planed to thickness size this way both halves have same grain pattern and color!

The Thumbhole stock is still in the designing stages. I am presently working on the butt contours which are slowly taking shape due to the complicated shape of the butt end of stock along with the cheek pad and thumbhole! Rough Stuff and yes it is a bit tasking on the brain cells. I hope to have the thumbhole stock designed out soon stay tuned to this thread.

12/09/2020 Update
20201209_182828.jpg
Finally have gotten the Mahogany for the final carve of the Monte Carlo SKS Gun Stock. I now have two slabs of Mahogany 31 3/16" long by 13 7/8" wide by 2 1/2" thick. I will not use it with that thickness. The required maximum thickness i will be needing would have to be about 1" - 1 1/4". So that leaves me with finding someone who has a machine where these slabs can be cut to where I have four slabs to work with (essentially cutting the thickness in half). There is a lumber yard a few miles from here that carries hardwoods of various types and sizes. It is my understanding they also have the tooling for what I am needing done to my two slabs of Mahogany. Road Trip!!!

On the last (Oct 2020) laminated carving test everything had gone according to plan. Fit-up was successful nothing but a few minor adjustments were needed.

First, thank you for taking us through your process. Truly inspirational.

Second, I have the place for gunstock blanks that everyone should at least LOOK at - you will be amazed at what they have.
Calicohardwoods.com

A lot of the Agriculture in Sonoma County California involved clearing previous walnut orchards for vineyards. These folks have access to mountains of walnut and they have an awesome selection.

While I was reading the development of this project I couldn't help but hope "he will proto on something cheap and then go for the expensive stuff" and sure enough you did. Well, you put in the CAD work; now time to feed the CAM something really good! Good luck and thank you for the posts.

3/05/21 Progress Update
Began carving Mahogany gunstock as a full body gunstock the photos below show the progress made so far. Only the top side internal carving needs to be done. Then the outside shaping and sanding needs to be completed.

Wood Fly --- Thank you for the kind words! I definitely will check out that website for gun stock blanks.
Problem with blanks there is no room for material holding/hold down!

One way that I use a lot on the rotary, to add room for the chuck to grip, is to glue on a square block of cheaper or leftover wood. I use hot melt glue because it is quick to attach and releases easily using isopropyl alcohol. It also makes it easy to set the centreline on the project. I have used this method to attach a block onto a partially finished project such as a bowl or cup with the inside already carved.

Progress Report 03/24/2021

Carved out the inside of the Mahogany Full Gun Stock fit checked to Rifle Mechanics needed more removed from inside topside for Rifle Mechanics to fit properly. Made additional carving Rifle Mechanics now fit gun stock snugly. Now with the majority of the stock complete it is time to sand, shape the stock hand grip and butt end of stock.

of a gunstock I like but struggling on how to profile (shape) the stock. any help would be greatly appreciated.
