Vectric Customer

This is a plaque I did for my daughter's new apartment, used a pre-made plaque, but had to coat it with lacquer and wax the top before applying the paint mask as I've had the avery paint mask pull the finish off these plaques in the past.

Nice job! What brand mask did you use and did you apply the lacquer, wax then the mask? How well does it stick to wax? I've attempted masking of lacquer before, but left some pretty nasty residue behind.

I did a couple of coats of lacquer and let them dry on the plaque, then applied a generous layer of the minwax paste wax. I hardly let it dry before laying over the Avery paint mask (sorry don't remember the product number, but it's pretty tacky).

I did the carving, then made sure the paint mask was pushed down and trimmed where it came loose, which wasn't much, then spray painted, let it dry overnight, then removed the paint mask.

Since there was some wax and I had a couple of areas that the mask still was loose or gone, the paint on the plaques finish scraped right off cleanly. I just did a quick buff of the left over wax to give it a satin finish.

Thanks for the wax idea! I will try that today. I just started using oramask spray stencil film, and it can be tough to remove from some finishes if not taken off in a short time. I've had to pull it while the sprayed paint was still wet which makes some problems. It holds up fairly well even in some fairly small detail areas.

Was the wood a little wet? That cambrium layer tearout looks like partially air dried?

Thanks Scott. Don't think the wood was wet, I think it was a combination of soft basswood and too fast carving speeds. Have never had real good luck with basswood but it is very plentiful here. Just picked up a few slabs at a wood carving festival last weekend.

Whilst I'm generally not a huge fan of homilies, this one I liked and I have the perfect person in mind who'll love it. Your version looks to have come out really well. I'll try and post a copy of my version, if / when I get a chance to make it.

Thank you for the file. I really appreciate it. I have never used painters mask before and I have a couple of questions. Do you put it over the wood then let your bit cut the painters mask and the wood at the same time or do you use a vinyl cutter and cut the painters mask then place it over the wood and run the profile. I am sure I am overthinking this but would appreciate the help.
