Ike's Gamble - A D-Day Tribute

Post by saaismail »

Hi Folks,

I thought I'd share a recent project that I've been working on for some months and planning for a few years. I'm a bit of a WW2 nut, and after a trip to Normandy to visit the invasion sites in 2011, I came back with some sand, and an idea that I wanted to create a display for both my M1 Garand Rifle with a strong D-Day theme. It turned out to be basically a D-Day display case that happens to have a rifle in it.

I used Vcarve Pro and my home-made CNC to do quite a bit of it, including: All the lettering, cutting the map, all of the "3D" symbols on the map and the "SHAEF" shield patch on the front of the case. None of these things were particularly tough for Vcarve to handle (as you can imagine), but I don't know what I would have done without this software and my CNC to add some nice details!

The whole idea was to try to both honor the men who planned and executed the invasion while also visually telling some of the story. I call it "Ike's Gamble" because it was Eisenhower, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force who had the decision fall to him whether to proceed with the attack on 6/6/44 when his senior leadership was split due to poor weather conditions.

Here's a quick video with some close-ups and pics below:

Anyway, I hope you find it of interest and thanks to Vectric for the fantastic software!
Scott

What a fantastic representation. Very creative and well done! Thank you for sharing your project. Adding the sand is a very nice touch.

I missed the video when I first posted. Excellent addition.

Very nice! I especially like the pattern the dark wood forms with the light wood in the corners!

Thanks guys! It's funny you saw it on Facebook. I've posted it a couple places, but I think there has been a few shares. Since Vcarve helped so much with it, I wanted to make sure I got it here to thank the Vectric guys.
