And yet another LED edge-lit project
Just thought I'd share one I did for my wife. Size is about 1/4" X 9" X 12" I used a onsrud 20 deg .020" engraver and went .010 deep.
Font is snowdrift which was perfect, but obviously takes a bit of time to cut. Picture was hand drawn.
Sorry about the pics not being perfect, but trying to capture the different effects can be tricky.
I made the stand to accept different edge lit signs for the different seasons/holidays.
Thanks for looking-
Dave

Dave, I like your sign! Would you be willing to share some details about how you constructed your base? Materials used, where you got them, etc?
Thank you,
Jim

Absolutely, Jim, it's 80/20 extrusion with the endcaps both modded to fit the routing of the LED and plug setup.jimwinchell wrote:Dave, I like your sign! Would you be willing to share some details about how you constructed your base? Materials used, where you got them, etc?

Thanks, Dave! Great idea using the 80/20! If I could be so bold to ask... if you had a moment, would you be willing to post some photos of just the base so we could get an idea of how the LEDs were routed and what mods you did to the end-caps?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: And yet another LED edge-lit project
Really nothing elaborate as I just cut a slot in between the aluminum "tangs" that stand up so the LED could curl down inside. I also did a matching slot in the endcap to allow the cord to exit.jimwinchell wrote:Thanks, Dave! Great idea using the 80/20! Re: And yet another LED edge-lit project
Hello Dave,
Very nice, should have known someone was making holiday theme edge-lit
With the 8020 your using it appears it accepts 1/4" acrylic? Are you using Lumenedge 6mm wide strips? as they are the only supplier I can find that sells that narrow single color or RGB strip.
Great idea using that extrusion! Did you use a set screw to firm the panel? or is it tight already?
With a couple lock screws it would make a great hanging sign.

Dave,
Sorry, think you answered my question on last post. You milled a slot between flanges so a wider led strip fits in box of extrusion, is that correct?

Here's a shot with the cord pulled out a bit for you, and you can see the slots. No lumenedge, just used the LED adhesive for the attachment.glenninvb wrote:Hello Dave,

Acrylic can change in size and I added a shim to keep it "solid". Yes, I also added 2 stainless screws and nuts for the interchangeable panels.
This one can also be hung as well as my wife has some ideas for hanging it already!

Actually, no, that's not the way those extrusions are made. Inside the 2 "tangs" for the acrylic, there is a floor. Like the pic below.

Ouch! $16.46 shipping seems a bit excessive for a $1 part that weighs 0.02 lbs.!!

It's not that much, just shoot them an email and tell them what you'd like, they're happy to give you a reasonable price.ssflyer wrote:Ouch! $16.46 shipping seems a bit excessive for a $1 part that weighs 0.02 lbs.!!
Not sure why they do that though, kind of a put off unless you know better.

Re: And yet another LED edge-lit project
Dave,
Got it now, I just thought when you said you cut slot, you cut the "floor" out. You only slotted the end for wiring.
If you did mill out the extrusion like my drawing you could use most any width led strip.
How wide are the strips your using or how wide is it between the flanges?
No more questions
Thanks,
Glenn

Between flanges is .320" and the LED strips are 5/16ths wide.glenninvb wrote:Dave,
