Crackle Finish

Post by Paul_n »

These 2 plaques were finished with a 'crackle' paint.

(1) First finished the board with the crackle finish paint.
(2) Then applied a couple coats of clear finish.
(3) Then did the v-carve and outside cuts.
(4) Then painted the gold, wiping it I went.
(5) Then did a couple more coats of clear finish.

Those are pretty cool. It looks like marble in the photos.

Hi Paul,

Very interesting paint effect.

Looks like the router has been working over-time!

Thanks,
Tony

A poor man's way to get the same effect is to apply your base coat and let it dry. Then paint this surface with hide glue (such as Franklin's in the US) Then apply your topcoat. Viola! it should crackle.

AKViking...

Thanks, I'll give that a try... Will this work with 'water-base' paint ?

I've used a spray on stone paint that looks very good but the texture is fairly rough. Is the crackle finish smooth or rough.
