New Top

Post by jimandi5000 »

Hello All,

I have been busy...

I have a new mill top. After 2 days of work it is done.

I moved away from screws in the t-track. I now am using a rabbit to hold the t-track in place. The up pressure from the clamp is in compression with the MDF and not trying to pull the screws out of the table.

To seal the top, I put 2 coats of clear after leveling the top. I may put two more coats if I see it is not able to resist water.

I hope your have as much fun as I am. :)

Looks great, why are you concerned about water?

Hi Phil,
I live in Houston and we have high humidity. The MDF is like a sponge and swells.
I find sealing the top keeps the top in good shape for many years. If I cut into the top, I will touch up the top with more sealer.
Thanks,
Jim

Did you seal the bottom as well?

Yes... The process goes like this.
The bottom layer 3/4" MDF sheets is sealed with 2 coats of polyurethane (not thinned) top and bottom. Not the edges because I will flush cut them with a trim router bit after mounting (self drilling & tapping screws) on the steel frame.
The middle layer of 3/4" MDF layer is on sealed with 2 coats of polyurethane (not thinned) on the bottom only, because I will glue the top layer to the middle layer. The top layer of 1/2" MDF is sealed with polyurethane (thinned 50%) after the top is skimmed with the mill flat and mill the 3/4" diameter dog holes.
Thanks,
Jim

That t-track looks different. What brand is it?

Kinda looks like extruded 8020 or something like that.

Thanks,

Andy
