🎶Zank’s for the memories…

Post by laflippin »

…of candlelight and wine🎶

In progress: One-piece red oak tray inlaid with wenge and padauk. I really, really wish that there was something I could do to preserve the orange color of the padauk in this project. I usually coat Zinlays in oak with polyurethane but that will SAS turn padauk deep blood red, from plenty of past experience. If anyone knows a miracle finish for padauk I need to know it….please.

Later edit: whoa! I may have found an answer to that padauk color question ! See:

Yow! Waterborne acrylic…who knew? Will try that and report back at a later time if the current vivid orange color on the freshly sanded right-hand side is preserved.

Very nice! Can't wait for finished piece!

Re orange wood, did you try Yellowheart? If it doesn't color shift then you've got a yellow butterfly, but I'll bet a light amber finish will shift it enough.

In my experience yellowheart stays bright yellow indefinitely under polyurethane. Unfortunately I don’t think there are any yellow Monarchs…at least not where I am.

Alright! Got this baby stored in the dark and a qt. of Deft brand waterborne acrylic (satin) on order from Amazon. Hoping for the best, will report the actual result no matter how it finishes out.

Check out Waterlox Urethane. I've been using it for the last few projects. It does a good job and it dries crystal clear as advertised. It's a true urethane so it takes at least one day to dry between coats but, tor protection, there isn't anything better than urethane.

EDIT: BTW, nice job on the inlays.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. The crucial thing in this instance is not so much protection of the wood as it is, specifically, will Waterlox urethane preserve the orange color of padauk (or will it turn padauk red, like so many finishes seem to do?).

I misspoke when I said Yellowheart, I meant to say Yellow Mora, which has a more orange-ish/brown coloring.

However, it looks like you've got it well in hand! Well done!

Thanks, Tom, I will search yellow mora to learn something about it….always on the lookout for new and interesting wood types.

Have you ever purchased any yellow mora? If, so, from where?

I have and it was from an exotic wood supplier in North Carolina, World Timber Corp; Here's a link to their Mora,Yellow page:
