Zank Inlay….mostly

Danaus plexippus

This unfinished 9 x 17 oval tray from American poplar was originally intended to be a 3-wood Zank Inlay with the yellowheart and maple caterpillar body outlined by African wenge. Unfortunately I screwed the pooch during glue-up of the male workpiece carved from wenge…thought I had a good fit between the male and female pieces but managed to misalign them while applying “letter-press” style clamps. Quite an unpleasant surprise to figure that out after removal of the waste backing.

After very nearly exhausting my complete lexicon of expletives and naughty physical gestures, I regained some composure and decided to continue on with the work anyway in order to use it as a learning experience for a future stab at this project. The yellowheart and maple inlay steps worked pretty well but the part of the female engraving that was meant to be inlaid with wenge needed to be excavated of dried glue and wood fragments with a Dremel tool, then it was filled in with a dark paste made of walnut and purpleheart dust mixed with clear epoxy.

Below is a picture of my models from the milkweed garden…

Looks great. Unless you make a point of telling someone about it, everyone will assume that's the way it's supposed to look.

I agree with dealguy11 on this one. It adds some character to it and I did not even notice... it just looks really nice!

Speaking for myself, I would go ahead and finish it... projects like these are cherished for what makes them perfectly imperfectly. :D

So, what's the problem? Pull yer pants up and make another one! :D Then finish both of them at the same time. :D ( I screwed up my first Nordic Santa, in a similar way, and its the one my wife chose to keep! Go figger. )
