conical fluting toolpath

Post by RayHari »

I want to create a conical fluting toolpath. The moulding toolpath creates a non-tapered toolpath if I give a straight line as the rail and a semi circle as the profile. I want the same except the radius of the semi circle should change from one end of the rail to the other from 1/2 inch to 1/4th inch. Is there a gadget available for this? I am using VCarve Pro 9.512 for shopbot.

Your description is a bit confusing (at least to me). A picture or two would do wonders in getting help with a solution.

Not many people read posts in the gadgets section as it's very specialised. You might get more responses if you post in the VCarve section with a picture of what you want to do. Quite often there is a way of doing things with a combination of toolpaths that doesn't require a gadget.

You can do this in Aspire with a 2 rail sweep. But it is beyond the capabilities of VCarve as far as I can tell.
Good judgement comes from experience.

Still need a sketch...thinking something like 4D's Fluting Toolpathing a cork stopper shape,
Used that a couple of times for odd stuff and worked great once past the first plunge toolpath.
Simple sketch of shape would help.

I expect this is what is wanted. Simple loft in Rhinoceros. Presumption: 2 inch length.
Loft 1/2R to1/4R; 2" length
Loft 1/2R to1/4R; 2" length

This image shows what I want. The fluting is conical in the sense that it looks like a straight rhinocerous horn split length wise.

Is there a way to move the thread to another section? Or do I have to do a fresh post in the general section?

+1

I've tried several ways that I could think of, but can't get exactly what you want in VCP

John,

I expect it is possible to do what the poster want using the fluting toolpath. It's jut that you're going to need many toolpaths and not just one. It'll also involve some fancy drafting to layout the cut paths for half the semi-circle (semi-hemi-circle?) to get the required depths of cut for the start and end points.

Or one could model it in a 3D-program such as Rhino and cut it using a finishing toolpath...
