A couple of ideas:

If you go to the CMT site (link below) you can enter a dealer search for Canada by entering your zip code. You may find someone local that has it or can order it for you.

I see Woodcraft carries them and if you go to their Customer Service area they talk about shipments to Canada. Again, links below.

I am sure you will pay top dollar because of the circumstances (but hopefully not $75), but in my opinion the bit is worth it. Plus, when used with care they last a long time.

Tim
Thanks for your help, I have already checked these before posting. The problem here is getting the bit across the border. If the company ships via UPS, and most due, we get gouged really heavily for Brokerage Fees which often exceed the price of the bit and then pay shipping on top of that. I am hoping that a fellow Canadian has figured this out and is willing to reveal there source, lol. I can get a bit a similar bit here at Lee Valley ($45 & free shipping) but I wanted to try the Laser Point as I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Carved the lid from some scrap laminated box store pine last night when I was doing some other shop work.

Been informed by someone 4ft tall this morning that I need to make two of these now, one for her and one for her sister.

Great work- I can see why you had orders for more!!

Its glued up laminated wood strips that are about 2" wide and the boards I buy comes in 6' lengths and are 12" wide x .7" thick. They cost about $8 here for one. The ones I buy are pretty dense towards regular pine (more heartwood I think) and weighs about 50% more then regular pine. If I had done this out of regular grade1 pine, I would have a lot of fuzz and splintered out areas.

Some places call them pine laminated shelving, there is a few grades of them. They are pretty stable and dont tend to twist or bow.

I get these at Home depot but almost any wood store should carry some version of them.

Give these guys a call. I don't know where you are in Canada. Island Saw is on Vancouver Island.

I ordered a new bit just to do this project.

Any suggetions on feed and speed for a project like this? I have not done a lot of V carving.

Thanks

Hi Morton,

The speed/feeds I specified in the project are fairly conservative and may be a good starting point. However, it depends upon the wood you are using and your particualr machine "behaviour". I carved the box on Maple (using a ShopBot Buddy PRSAlpha BT48) and those rates worked very well.

You might benefit from doing one or two partial test runs on your wood to see what the result is and adjust accordingly, if needed. (Keep RPM reasonably high but reduce feed rate a little if you get tearout, for example.) I'm sure there are others much more experienced than I who can offer some ideas/suggestions as well.

Thanks for the ideas! Always run short on creativity with high school kids and this one is perfect but leaves plenty of room for customizing. Too often, kids don't know what to do because they don't know what can be done.

This one (cherry) will stay in my classroom as inspiration / samples. One side has a 3D hummingbird, the other chip carve textured with monogram. Encountered a small amount of chipping in one or two areas on the top. I have a couple of daughters that are in line for similar versions...

Thanks Vectric staff.
