FREE Project - Steve Nelson - Pen & Pencil Box

Post by Olly »

With many years of experience in the workshop Steve Nelson has been able to use his traditional tools along with a combination of software packages and a CNC machine to create his projects.

I made a pen and pencil box a while back that was similar to this one. It was mostly made of components so it had to be cut using 3D toolpaths. Since the lid and bottom fit together as a “tongue and groove” this made it difficult to get an accurate fit. So, I thought it would be kind of cool to recreate the entire project without any components. It turned out to be easier than anticipated.

The molding toolpath wasn’t available for the first one I made so making the pen box with just toolpathing back then would have been difficult, at best. This recreation of the older project uses it for most of the inside and outside shapes including the round overs on the outside edges and the slots on the inside of the top and bottom.

The font I used was "Script Mt Bold". When I use a v-carve toolpath on lettering I like to convert the text to vectors and do a little editing and trimming so the letters carve a little smoother.

Thank You, Steve! Cool Pen/Pencil Box! Plan on carving it out of Cherry.

Just a thoughtful/helpful Tip - New Layer (call it Master Text) Copy Original/Unconverted Text to it then all an OP has to do is Click on Text and Open with the Text Icon to get Font Name or you could just put Font Name Using the Font then then OP won't have to go to the extra steps of opening the Text Menu. I have gotten in a Habit of doing either so that I don't have to remember What Text was used for the Project. Sometimes I just add Font Name to the Toolpath Notes it all depends on the type of project I am working on at the time.

Just Some Thoughts!
