FREE Project - Makers Mallet Dean Makes

Post by Olly »

Hey Vectricians,

We are excited to bring you a brand new FREE PROJECT courtesy of one of our wonderful community partners – Dean Makes!

Dean Wood is a self-taught wood fabricator, designer, CNC’er and creator who loves learning new things every day. Dean is always looking to add a modern twist to his projects and the inspiration behind this mallet was to create something multi-material and multi-purpose that functions as a practical woodworking tool and also looks cool with some extra fun features thrown in! In today's digital age, many woodworkers and DIY enthusiasts are turning to social media platforms to share their projects and tips and Dean is always grabbing his phone to take a quick picture or film a little clip of what he’s up to in the workshop. This gave Dean the idea to make his custom mallet with an integral thumb grip and phone stand giving you a handy way to keep your phone at a convenient angle to access all your favorite apps or music, and make it easier to record videos or watch tutorials while working in your shop!
In this video, Dean shows you how he crafts his mallet with the magic of Aspire to build up the design, using the sheets function to organize each component. Using 3D profile tools with neat shortcut keys, vector trimming, bezier curves and node mirroring, he creates the thumb grip and phone stand features to add character and function to the mallet. After making the prototype, Dean then uses pocket and profile machining to cut each side of the handle and mallet head plus the dowel fixings in beautiful Padauk and Maple, gluing each side together and adding Rubio oil as a finishing touch to make the Padauk pop!
