Finial 3D problem?

Post by Kubotaman »

I have attached a picture of a finial I drew for my indexer to cut. The two rail sweep came out correctly but when I view the 3D picure in Aspire, after running the toolpaths, it shows "walls" on the outer edge of the finial. I have made sure the vectors are exactly the same size of the material. Am I doing something wrong or is the picture like it should be?

The work area is slightly larger than what you see. I would suggest making the sweep larger than the size of your workspace.

Michael has hit the issue, but I also wanted to point out that I always make the part (in the job setup screen) a little longer so that the machining goes more than 360 degrees around the part - a bit more than the tool width. The 2-rail sweep is set up to the length of the part. Then I set the vector that defines the toolpath just inside the edges of the 2-rail sweep (in the direction equivalent to around the cylinder). The reason for this is to prevent either a slot or a tab from being left where the tool stops cutting.
