Question about Rotary

Post by RotateIt »

Hi!
I have had pretty good success with 2 1/2 D carving.
However I got my rotary a few weeks back, and I am having trouble, no idea what is going on.
I am running Vcarve desktop. I converted the Y axis to A.
I created my models in Rhino. They look nice after I import the sty file into Vcarve, then when I carve I seem to get weird results.
Attached a picture of a few carves.

It seems that Vcarve is not taking the diameter of the tool into consideration.
Along the X-axis everything seems fine, but it looks like Vcarve is calculating the tool path as if the tool had 0 mm diameter in the A direction, so it cuts too much material.
In the finishing tool path it seems like the ball end it cut too deep, by the amount of the radius of the ball end. The tools I used are 6.35mm end mill, 6.35mm ball end and R1mm tapered ball. So far only one carve has had moderate success.
In the 3rd carve The measurements were more or less right, there were just a few uncharted areas.

My Z0 and Y axis was precisely to about 0.2mm, as you can see in the picture.

Here is same STL file once 3D printed and then Carved on my rotary. The print is pretty good.

Without seeing the files, my first guess would be that in the Material Setup, you would need to center the position of the model inside the material.

I wonder if the “Path Accuracy” settings on page 9 of the Onefinity Controller Software manual might be a place to start: see here

Thank you, that is set to 0.05mm

ImageI think I have it... I have to run more tests, but:

VCarve probably ideally needs one good closed mesh.

I tried a test cut again and it was crisp.

I used the boolean union command before exporting it.

I might have exported separate stacked meshes that looked good to my eye, and would also work on the 3D printer,
but for some reason, VCarve cannot handle this kind of stl?
