Basic rotary question.

Post by chrisbeers@msn.com »

I am brand new to cnc. I'm able to do basic flat carving. I am trying to learn rotary. I have a 3040T cnc. I use Mach 3 and vcarve.

So i set my a axis up, put basic text on a rotary project, and put the piece in the rotary. First try I set the zero to the center of the piece. When i ran the program, the machine positioned itself over the piece and proceeded to bore right to the center.

Next I change the software to zero at surface of the piece. Start the machine, zero the bit to the outside diameter of piece, load the software (Mach 3) and press go. The machine instantly raises the z to the limit (tries to go past the z limit) then lines up on piece and again instantly bores to the center.

Can someone give me an idea of what I'm doing wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I already watched that video.

When i create the project in Vcarve it looks great. Not sure if I'm missing a setting or something else.

I can. How do I do that?

I just noticed that in the project under the quick engrave tab, that it say X 0.00 Y 0.00 Z 1.30. I'm thinking that may be the problem but i don't know how to fix it.

Since you originally started with Zero Position at the center, the Z Gap above the material may be extremely high after you re-positioned it to cylinder surface, may be why it's raising past the limits. Double check in the material setup the Z gap and reset at a lower amount. Without the file, it's only a guess.

I'll try that. Thank you.

I had to step away from it. My brain is tired from messing with it all day. Lol.

you may also need to look at how you have Mach 3 set up. It has been a while since I messed with mine so I do not recall the specifics.

The file will tell alot to those attempting to help, you will probably have to ZIP the file prior to attaching it.

If the file is too large to attach then you can place it on a site like drive.google.com, or dropbox.com, make it shareable, and share the link to the file here on the forum.
