Octagon handle Toolpath
I have a student who wondered about making an octagon profile using our rotary axis, except he want the cross section 1.5" tall but only 1" wide. It took a little drafting and some tweaking, but I'm sharing our results for all to use as the result makes a comfortable tool box handle. I believe the student was inspired by a youtube video showing a hammer handle that had a similar cross section. The file is from Aspire 9.519. All the vectors are in the .DXF file that any version should be able to import. For a 1.5" cylinder along the Y axis.

Steve,
I accept your thinking and will inform the student about the shape being "octagonal" and not a simple octagon.
I showed my sample to the class and a few other professors and now have several requests for that shape made into new handles for this-or-that thing they have.

I am pretty sure what Steve was referring to is that the file is named Hex Handle. . . . but. . . .
The shape is actually an octagon in the pic. . . . .
Funny this came up, was doing a segmented assembly this week, octagonal. But I did my calcs for a hexagon. Uh oh says me a few minutes later after I cut 8 parts that were all wrong. Sheeesh. . . . . .

You're right, of course TReischl. I so often make pockets for hex nuts that my mind must have defaulted to what I often name my polygon related files. My two math teaching sisters might claim a true octagon has 8 even length sides and the same angle at each corner. This moulding toolpath handle i'll call octagonal until I can come up with a hexoctagiggle shape.

"Are all sides of an octagon equal?
Properties of an Octagon
Regular octagons have sides that are congruent. That means that all of the sides of the octagon are the same measurement."
Soooo, we have "regular" octagons and just plain ol' octagons. Learn something new pretty much every day!
