Profiles and Spirals with a 3/4" Barley Twist bit

Post by Rcnewcomb »

These are 13" 2x2 pine scraps that came off a packing crate. I used a Magnate 7558 3/4" Barley Twist bit.
15K RPM, 60 IPM, 0.1" pass depth

Depth of cut for these pieces ranged from 0.125" to 0.1875"

I did not use a rounding toolpath at all since the profile and spiral toolpaths overlapped each other.
The profile columns took about three and a half minutes. (0:03:30)
The spiral column took about five and a half minutes. (0:05:30)

Both of you guy's barley twists are intriguing. I'm struggling with 4th axis work and I notice quite a bit or deflection near the center of the run on smaller diameter parts. Dale's walking sticks are beautiful and I would like to try to make something similar. Dale, could you post a photo of how you deal with deflection on long, narrow parts? Any other hints like tool bits and depth of cuts would be appreciated.
