Another morning and another 3 hours at the CNC.
The base of this table project is essentially a scaled down version of the top.

Such projects make me wish I had an ATC. 4 bits used. 5 toolpaths.

Proof of concept:

Straps connected easily with the hub nut lower. Twisted the post to pull them drum taught. Two hold the post vertical, but only in one axis. Two more will stabilize it in all directions. Top will be attached the same way. HDPE inset lets the post twist easily.

Looking good.
What holds the straps to the top & bottom?

A 5mm diameter, 5/8" long shelf pin, dropped in a slots in the bottom. On the top the pin slots are on the top of the table crossing the narrower slots for the straps. Straps poke through the top or bottom, a pin goes though a grommet near the end of the strap, and then pulls the pin back into it's slot until it bottoms out.
I inherited a lace edged piece of fabric my grandmother use to cover her end tables with. I'll see how it looks over the walnut top. If I use it it'll cover the strap/pin slots near the edges.

Straps all made. First full assembly. Wood parts need sanding and finishes but I couldn't wait to see if it actually worked.
Base assembled 1.jpg
Upper strap hub 1.jpg
Final assembly 2.jpg
Found I could tighten the top straps independent from the base straps by simply rotating the top around the post rather the holding it and twisting the post. Top stays secure and horizontal once straps are drawn tight. Seems to be no tendency for the straps to loosen over time so far, but if so a 1/4 turn of the post would tighten them all up again.
Challenges included making strap sets for the top and bottom the right length so all would tighten at the same time. Learned a couple tricks along the way. Learned much about cutting threads in wood, Good potential for use in future projects.
