1" surfacing bit rates

Post by kusb »

I am kind of new to CNC so I'm not sure if this is even practical, so I'll ask so that I can learn. I have a project that I would like to cut down 3/4" into the middle of a piece of wood (white ash). The area is about 14" x 10". I have a 1" carbide flyboard surfacing bit with a 1/4" shank. If this is even possible, what feed rate should I use, how deep per pass, and what should be used for stepover? If this is not practical or advisable, what else might be an alternative?

I would not recommend it. A fly cutter really isn't designed to remove that much material. You run the risk of having witness lines on the walls of the pocket. If the cutter fails you may destroy your material.

If your machine can handle bits with a 1/2" shank then I'd recommend a 1/2" end mill.

Here is a link to a Centurion 1/2" down shear that leaves a good bottom finish.
