How do you manage your STL files

Post by nicksilva »

I have literally thousands of STL files. I don't really want to just add them all to my aspire clip art library because they are also used outside of aspire.
What are you guys using to manage your files. I've got lots of subdirectory, so something that will create a tree and/or even a preview would be great. Any hints?
thanks in advance.

I make a lot of tool previews, then save JPG preview.

One folder for each STL. The folder has the JPG and the STL

You can group things with main folders
Animals
Plant
Scenery
3D
2D
ETC

make subfolders with the individual folders

I also have a main folder for IDEAS, with categorized subfolders

I converted mine to native Vectric formats a few years ago but prior to that I was using Accutrans3D to batch create JPG previews.

I wrote a program using AutoIt3 to load each STL into Aspire, size it and save it as an Aspire file automatically. It was written for one of the first versions of Aspire and won't work with the current versions but the concept will still work.

Follow this link and download the k-studio fill install the software on your computer you do not need to register or open the software. Just go into your stl folder and now you will have icon previews of all of your stl files. I also have 10's of thousands of stls and this was a lifesaver for me.

For those who are virtualizing a Windows machine on a Mac, Mac OS now offers a live preview of stl files in the Finder (the Mac counterpart of Windows Explorer).
Best regards
