Hello
I have searched high and low for an adapter of a chuck and drill chucks themselves.
The need is for instead of routing 1-1/4" wide holes I would like to attach a spade drill. This way I can use the existing 1/4" hole pattern and not have to add another pattern and route out circular holes. Just drop and drill where the smaller holes are.
I have checked numerous shopping sites and searched to no avail.Has anyone ever done this?
The current attachment style is collet hub. I have the 1/2",3/8",1/4" collets but standard 1/4" shaft dont fit up in the 1/4 collet hub.
I was thinking of making another mount for a hand drill but that is a whole other effort. It would be nice to just switch out the head itself.
I am FaceBook jailed at the moment so I can not ask over there.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Drill chuck for PorterCable 7518 router
I don't think that router will be able to slow the rpms down enough to be able to safely use a spade bit even if you did find a chuck that worked. My chart says you would want around 1000-1500 rpms for a spade bit that size depending on the material. That router should go down to 10k at the slowest unless you have some other means of slowing it down. I'm not saying I have tried it so good luck if you do, but I don't recommend this.

I agree with JeffZ, what you are considering is not a good idea. You could try a test to prove it to yourself but I don't recommend it. If you have a drill press crank it up to top speed and drill a hole with the spade bit. Be ready for smoke.

I am SERIOSLY reluctant to show this.
I SERIOUSLY do NOT recommend that you try to do what you are proposing.
Please go to a drill press.
Putting a 1-1/4 spade bit in your PC router spindle is a BAD idea.

My target material is UGX foam board so the material presents no real resistance.

What about fire?
My thoughts: Why not cut the shaft off to a shorter length and put straight into the collet chuck?

Re: Drill chuck for PorterCable 7518 router
That's probably much better.
But these bits are not balanced for high rotation speeds.
If your spindle can't run at a very low speed or if you forget to slow it down, be prepared to deteriorate it. It may also be dangerous.
Until you have a load of holes, you won't spend a lot of time cutting them with a standard mill as you can probaly cut this foam at a high speed with you sturdy machine.
Better safe than sorry.
What is the maximum bit diameter you can use?

Neither will your "boy parts" when a drill chuck rated for 2 or 3 thousand RPM explodes on it's way 15,000 RPM.
Don't do it!
