On the other hand... My current control system works, so maybe my speedy gantry build should be bumped up to the first project.

Here's a few Estes Park tips. Stay out of Elk charging range. There's a couple times per year that they're grumpy, and will attack. You can Google for the most recent event. For peak season (summer) stays, book your room early. Make sure you get to Antomio's pizza. There are 4 craft breweries, don't go to The Estes Park Brewery.

John, Great meeting you in Denver!

Chris,
We came in on Wednesday last week, shorts and a short sleeve fishing shirt.
Got up the next morning and there was 6" or more snow in the chairs outside the hotel window
But having spent time in Colorado in October before, I knew to rent a Wrangler
It made the trip memorable.

Hey Ed,

Glad we had the opportunity to sit down and talk a little bit, wish it could have been longer...

John,
Agreed! If you get any where near the mountains of NC, come on by for a visit!

Nobody else in this thread may like it, but LinuxCNC has been running my 3-axis gantry router just fine. It's a real-time OS and rock solid from my perspective. I've even applied system updates while machining. Not that I do that often, it was more of a test case, but there was no drop-off in performance. And it's free, so what's not to like?

Wasn't Linux the first? Wasn't it always free? Forget us, it appears the world has already voted. Long ago.

Good morning all. I have a 3 axis DIY CNC with an Android with gShieldv5 controller now. I want to update this to a 4axis controller and found this thread. There is a lot of great information here and I wanted to first say thanks and follow up with a question. Given the setup I have now, I dont have individual motor drivers so I think I'm looking for a controller that has them built in, so the Acorn seams a bit more like what I want. WinCNC is more expensive, I do have a PC out int he shop, but want to update later, so I'm not sure I want a PCI card. I also found the Buildbotics controller which looks good from the web-site. The Acorn and Buildbotics are close in price also. I have 3 Automation Technology KL23H286-20-8B motors now that I would connect to the controller and of course will need another for the new 4th axis. So any thoughts on this ?

The Acorn does NOT have motor drives built in.
Controls do not include drives.

Centroid's step & direction controls don't have drives built in. That said, they do have a model. the AllinOneDC that does have drives for DC servos built in. An all in one solution for old machines with legacy dc servos. (not steppers)
