Modified Dome

Post by Rick_S »

I'm using VCarve Pro v10 and trying to make "modified" dome, i.e. it will be approximately 2" high,14" long and 10" wide. The curvature of the dome must run along the long axis but not the short axis. I can create a dome in the material (poplar) but I'm lost on how to effectively remove the dome from the short axis. .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Rick

A photo or drawing would really help.

Here is a link to the FAQ describing how to upload a photo or file. (How do I upload files or photos to the forum?)

If the file is too large to upload here you can use a file sharing site such as drive.google.com, onedrive.com, or dropbox.com. They all have free accounts available
  • Upload the file to the file sharing site
  • Make the link shareable
  • Share the link to the file here
For screenshots please use the Windows Snipping tool. These are far easier to read than photos taken with your phone.

Something like this? If so, then you will need Aspire or some other 3d modeling program.

Clipart-3D Tabs-Circular_0.25 would probably work. VCarve Pro 10.5

FixitMike - how does one change the oval or round shape to rectangular? I can create a dome of the correct height in the material, and I can stretch the dome to an ellipse. But the problem I have is cutting off the edges on one axis of the shape.

I didn't. I started with a clipart shape that was rectangular and changed the length, width, and height to suit.

If you absolutely have to start with a round model, just cut a pocket along the edge in question.

As FixitMike has already said there are a couple of circular tabs in the 3D tabs clipart that might work, not the circular tabs at the top but if you look at the bottom of the 3D tabs you can see there are a couple that are rectangular in shape, you would need to scale it to the correct length & width & then go into the component properties & alter the shape height

Rick I see that you are new to the Forum.

Be sure to adjust the toolpath settings (Feed/Speed, etc.) to accommodate your machine. The Tool Settings in that .crv file are for my cnc machine they may be too aggressive for your machine.

And yes this is a Great Forum with many knowledgeable craftsman!!!

Happy Carving!!!

You are correct that I am something of a newbie at this, so forgive me if these questions seem rather elementary.
A couple of questions:
In the file I see two tool paths - Swept Profile 1 and Profile 1. Do I need to run Profile 1 at all?
When I ran Swept Profile 1 on my X-Carve 1000MM the spindle moved to the correct position to start the cut, but then plunged straight down through the material. I ran another project and it cut correctly so I think there is one or more setting I need to adjust to correct this. Can you provide any help on this?

TIA

Rick

I should also add that the material 1.9375" (1 15/16") thick.
