Tool Database - Save Early, Save Often

Post by Tex_Lawrence »

Here's a recent experience (I learned this a few years ago, but forgot) that I had while updating my tool database. Once you get in a groove on something, you tend to forget a few rules. As I've found out, Vcarve doesn't provide any backup while you are editing the tool database.

Here's my tip or trick. Click "Ok" after every tool change, and then reload the tool database to add/change another tool.

I queried Vectric support about this, because I was unsure this was by design. I've not run into this kind of process since early PC days.
Am I crazy or can one add 3 tools to one's database, applying and
verifying along the way, looking at them while adding another one and
then hit "Cancel" next to "Ok" and all the changes go away? Can that
really happen?

So, there's no "Do you really want to discard your additions?" middle
ground reminder? The database is reverted to what it was before you
added 3 tools?

Is that really how its designed to work?
And I got this back from support, but it wasn't very satisfying:
Thanks for your inquiry.

That is currently how it is designed, yes.

I will pass your feedback along to our development but please bear in mind I cannot say if or when this would be changed.

Regards,

Adam Moran

Ha! That was the tag line from the old "Leisure Suit Larry in The Land of The Lounge Lizard's" computer game.

After losing many hours of playing (and much aggravation), I learned "Save Early and Save Often" and it's stuck with me ever since.

(always good advice though)

Vectric Support listens. They added this patch in version 10.514 to help keep us from erasing (as in my post here) the changes we make to the Tool Database. I still think the user interface isn't "normal", but at least there's one last chance to keep from destroying changes.
10.514

Fix crash in Pocketing Toolpath when open vectors are selected (regression in 10.513)

Added confirmation when clicking 'Cancel' button in Tool Database
