Vcarve Inlay unnecessary toolpaths

Post by SovekDesigns »

When generating the male/plug portion of the inlay, I normally create an offset (evelope) vector a little over 1/8" and then use a 1/8" bit to cut the male part out. However, the toolpath generated will actually "V-Carve" the waste part of the vector as well (with some lengthy passes for complex parts). Is there a way (besides editing G code) to tell the software not to V carve the "envelope" vector?

Thanks

Can you post your CRV file that show an example of what you are describing?

(How do I upload files or photos to the forum?)

If the file is too large to upload here you can use a file sharing site such as drive.google.com, onedrive.com, or dropbox.com. They all have free accounts available
  • Upload the file to the file sharing site
  • Make the link shareable
  • Share the link to the file here

I have zipped the crv file and attached it here.

If you look at the "Plug 1/16 Clear" and "Plug 20 Deg V bit" toolpaths, you'll see that it is machining along the outside vector as well which is a waste of time since it is going to be eventually cut out by the "Plug Cutout" toolpath.

Hope this helps

There is no connection between the Plug Cutout toolpath and the others so they have no idea that that material will be removed later.

Toolpaths are independent of each other unless they are multi-tool pocket or v-carve toolpaths such as the three above the cutout one.

I agree that the "cutout" toolpath is independent of the rest and the there is no way for the system to know that I intend to cut out.

Having said that, the Plug tool paths (the two clearing paths and the one v carve path) are not independent of each other.

The attached picture picture below shows the Vcarve path. Again, the system does not know whether it should machine the outside vector or not, but is there a way to tell it not to?

If the software has no way to do what you want you sometimes need to help it out.

Change the size of the bit and see what happens. It looks like you are cutting a 4mm wide path with a 1/8 ~ 3mm Vbit. The software would have to create paths for both sides because the bit would not be able to cut both sides at once.
