Gluing Plexi Glass

Post by olf20 »

I'm making a viewing window in a control
box. I want to glue two pieces of plexi glass
together (one on top of the other). What glue
do you guys use??
Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply John!
When gluing two flat pieces together to make it
thicker does the glue distort the view thru the
glued pieces??

Never tried gluing two thin pieces together to make a thicker piece. The glue is crystal clear so if you make sure the piece is completely covered and no bubbles, it might work.

Will the perimeter edges be concealed when the viewing panel is installed? If so, perhaps you can apply glue only around the edges to make your double-layer.

Micheal's suggestion might work better, but warning, don't use the Acrylic Cement on the edges, it will be wick into the Plexi and mess up the edges.

Yes - maybe just some clear silicon around the outside edges would suffice (if the edges will be concealed).

What I'm doing is using a plastic box 8 x 10 with a door on
it. I want to have a window 2 x 3 in the door of the box.
I have already cut the hole in the door and have the window
cut to size. I have already done one previously and when I
applied super glue around the edges to seal them, the plexi
glass window kind of got milky where the super glue was
applied.
My plan on this one is to cut the hole in the door and window
just like I did on the first one, but cut a larger window to put
on the inside of the door and glue the two together so I can
glue the larger window to the door on the inside and seal it.
After rethinking this I might be better off to get a thicker piece
of plexi glass and just cut the window out and leave a step
around the edge to silicone to the door.
I will experiment with gluing two pieces together just for
the experience.
Thanks for the replies and the info!

Had some 3/8" plexi scrap. Milled the window out
done a pocket / cutout. Boom siliconed edges and
done. Really turned out great.
I was over thinking the task! But I learned some things.
