I only used two sided tape on my projects in the beginning, but soon realized that it was called a spoilboard for a reason. I know use corner jigs cut from outdoor plywood with a small curve in the center to hold old my projects. I also use self drilling screws to easily lock the jigs in place.
On large projects I use a first cut of 1mm to outline all my projects so that I know where to safely put the self drilling screws.
The jigs are double functions as it was designed to also help me in clamping pieces square. I have added the project file below.
Here is a link to a sample screw box. Buy them in quantity since they have a very large head, I can also use them force the project piece onto the spoilboard nice and flat.

For the clamps, notice there is an outside piece and an inside piece.

Re: Avoiding Machine Gotchya's
From my experiences, people tend to run their machines too SLOW, not too fast.
It's almost as if there's a contest of who can take the longest time to do a relief cut. "here it is, after 36 hours cutting" type stuff.

I had a few moments so I manually redrew these. Maximum size of cutter that can cut these is 3/8" (9mm).
