Gear rack?

Post by Ian.Bedwell »

Hi

I'm doing ok with gears (thanks for the great info) but want to create a rack to mate for a simple rack and pinon on a childs car. Any suggestions as cutting off a tooth and trying to duplicate it didnt seem to give a very good job.

After copying one tooth from your pinion paste it in to a new instance of VCP. Be sure it is a complete single tooth and be sure it is oriented perpendicular to either x or y axis. You may want to copy it to another layer to store the original. Then use the linear array of copies tool to make the copies of the tooth. Select 1 row or 1 column depending on the orientation and enter the number of teeth in the other. be sure gap is selected with 0 values. Select copy and this should form all the teeth for your rack. Add the rest of the vectors to complete the rack and joint them all to together as a closed vector.

This should work for you if your original single complete tooth is drawn right. Gear teeth made on a machine like ours and cut with an endmill smaller than the full radius root of the gear tooth.

I'm not an expert on gears. But Fixitmike posted a procedure for drawing them that really helped me. You should find his procedure as a download somewhere in this thread http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... rs#p160737
Be sure to get the improved version of his procedure.

Hope this helps. Have a great day!

I've posted some rack information at http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... ck#p148041 .

Note that you will have to modify a standard rack by adding a radius for the bit so you can cut it with a router.

Don is correct. Most of the popular gear generator programs will generate vectors for a matching rack.
