Candle holders spiral toolpaths
I wanted to try out the Milo Scott method of spiral toolpathing on some of my old projects. I had to do some maintenance on my machine and was forced to wait a while for parts so I'm just now getting around to finishing the project. As far as I can tell, the quality of the cut is the exactly the same as a 3D toolpath and the cut time was reduced by more than half. The wood is Bubinga. It's really hard and heavy wood to work with but carves good.

One of the factors in the reduction of time on rotary projects is accurately setting z-zero to the center of rotation. It took a lot of time and with the help of WinCNC and DVE2000 to get macros set up to do this. Now, all I need to do is measure the tool using the "Rotary Tool Measure" macro and run the project. This cuts the setup time down considerably. Using the spiral technique and the macros to set z-zero, a square blank can be turned to an exact diameter with a very smooth finish in just minutes.
