Legal Tender?

Post by Tailmaker »

I could not afford the real thing, so I went into the forgery business
That said, the cost of the 3d model at $40 was more than the nominal coin value but still way less than the trade value of a 1/4 ounce Golden Eagle 10-Dollar coin (about $650).
Fun thing to do and now I can forge a zillion more coins and pay for all my toys. Nobody will notice it is 3 times the diameter of the real thing...

That is some project and on end grain, too! +1

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get that coin model? I've got a standing order from a good friend for one of the Virginia quarters, but I've never found a model for it in any size (without raiding the government files!)

Very Nice job. Be careful that Biden don't see it. He'll want to tax you.

I think it can only be done to that level of detail with very hard end-grain wood. Otherwise, the letter features (which are taller than wide) would chip off. I made use of another one of my Mountain Mahogany slices with 0.25mm radius tapered ballnose for finish cut. Took about 3hours for both sides.

I found the coin model after long search on CG-Trader: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-model ... berty-coin
They do have many more coin models but mostly, they are just a simple 3d-mesh without details and the look comes from the texture image. This was the only one I found that has all the details in the .stl file. (94MB).

Here some better quality pics with the finishing oil dried off:

I have been looking slowly for the right piece of mesquite. Wood Magazine says little about end-grain work, but it implies that one should have a supply of sharp bits to get the job done!

I think your "coin" would look good in mesquite, too.

Should work with Mesquite as well, I guess.
I bought a box of Mountain Mahogany slices a while ago that were meant for wedding table centerpieces. Had to dry them very slowly in plastic bags for a year to avoid splitting. This wood is normally not commercially available because the bushes are crooked and make only small pieces since they grow very slowly. But it is super dense (does not float), hard (3200 Janka) and cuts like plastic. You can see in the first 2 pictures that it comes off the machine practically without fuzz. Great for such small trinkets or jewelry. If I find another eBay offer, I will probably buy more.

Will you be making a public offering for your coin as an alternative to BitCoin? :)

Looks like you took it right to the edge of your materials limits G. :)
Particularly like the branch she's holding!
Did you lose the right hand "Rays" during cutting...or trying to finish??

Well Done! :)

Interesting idea. I read it costs about $9000 to mine one BitCoin with optimized computer hardware.
Way cheaper to mine one of my coins out of wood. And in a way, both have no real life value other than being rare and a novelty.
But I don't want to have my coins to be used by drug or international arms dealers. Therefore, this one will probably be the only one made

Not really. They might be a tad bit lower in the model but mostly this is due to the lighting angle. If you look from another side they are almost the same. For that matter, there was no "finishing" or sanding other than a Danish Oil coat. I swiped the surface quickly with a brush to remove small chips and dust but that was it.

Thanks Tailmaker,
I can see how it might just be in the pic after looking at it again.

I'm a Great lazy fan of dense woods and a no sanding finish!! :)
Great work!
