Christmas Barrette
Double sided job with:
2 inlays
3 outlays
5 woods: poplar, maple, beech, juniper and walnut
and 2 Design and Make models
The base of the barrette is a really nice vein of purple I recently found in some poplar trim work I was installing. I really don't know of any other wood that displays the purples and greens that can be randomly found in poplar.
The moon is inlaid maple.
Santa is from a very old piece of beech beam I pulled from an early industrial building here in Buffalo.
The reindeer are juniper and the mountains are walnut.
The 2 Design and Make models are Santa 1 and Mountain Range 1
The back inlay did not come out as expected and I normally would have recut and redone but I kind of liked it. Felt like it may have added a certain nostalgic/vintage characteristic to the barrette so I went with it.
The finish is an oil based polyurethane which added a nice amber glow to the piece and softened the transitions between the different woods.
A very satisfying project and a very happy Wife.
Thanks for looking.
Patrick

Hi Scott. I used an Amana .0312” Tapered Ball Nose.
