Beki's Trinket Tray

Post by slowoodworker »

I had a piece of walnut burl I scrounged at our local makerspace that was just about the right size for Beki's trinket tray.
After cutting it out, I realized I should have changed it around so I could leave the raw edge of the burl intact. (Though there was some bark intrusion that probably would have fallen out at some point.) A few fine cracks required a bit of superglue.
Finish is Deft spray lacquer. Bits were 1/4" flat end mill for roughing, and 1/4" ball nose for finish. I had about a 9 or 10 percent stepover on the ballnose and I should have gone smaller.

I'm thinking that looks really good. After it gets some use, then there will be plenty of scratches to mask any that you see now.

I don't agree with using the "live edge" for this project. It would make it difficult to use. I think raw edges aren't nice to touch and most likely will crumble in places.

I expect that the posted order of the 4 images is not chronological. It would seem the live edge has cut fully away.

I see what you are saying! :D :D :D

However, what I was referring to without clearly explaining was the following from the OP:

"After cutting it out, I realized I should have changed it around so I could leave the raw edge of the burl intact."

The designer deserves all the credit. (And maybe a little goes to the "giving tree".) :)
