Re: Carved Walking Stick PDF Update
Dale,
What are you doing to support long pieces in the rotary?
Any best practices on reducing vibration while carving long, thin rotary work?

Re: Carved Walking Stick PDF Update
I got interrupted and didn't finish the post, took too long and could not edit. Will try to redo later, meanwhile if you would like the UPDATE PDF FOR CARVED WALKING STICKS USING DOUGLAS FIR SEND A PM WITH EMAIL and I will send it to you. Even zipped the file is 4meg too big to post.
Randall to answer your question, my pieces are 28" long so support is not a problem since I am using such a small bit... 1.5mm
Most of the time I use 1/4" end mill for rounding and pocketing these sticks though it does take a bit longer adds very little deflection pressure.
The handle part uses a 1/2" profile bit but is so close to the chuck is a non-issue
If you have a smooth spot and because the movement is down and to the side of the bit a couple pieces of UHMW work really well.
Super slick and last a really long time. You could even round one the size of your round blank, cut a slight round the leading edge so it wont catch the wood.
Good to see you in SD

Re: Carved Walking Stick PDF Update
Randy, sorry it took so long to answer... haven't been home much lately.
No vibration problems with `1.5mm bits.
These turnings are only 28" long.
Notice on the sticks the areas that are not carved, you can but supports at those positions.
Before I made the sticks in two parts, I used this method. The best support is the three wheel variety.

PS If you want an answer quicker, send a PM then I get an email and will answer no matter where I am.
