Stacking Christmas Tree

Post by dhellew2 »

Inspired by Todd's Christmas stacking tree I decided to create a laser cut one.

Finished size is 9.5"x17" (241.3mm x 431.8mm).
Designed in inches then cut in mm.

Cut from 1/4x16"x48" Baltic birch plywood.

Setup in the center of the part, making it easier to work around job center.
I made use of flip about job center instead of circular array to get the effects I wanted.
Used a snowflake, eliminated all but one half of one "arm" then modified it.
Each snowflake is 1/2" smaller than the one below and are spaced with two 6mm thick rings.
Rings are also 0.12" smaller diameter than the layer below making a tapered tree trunk.
There are 5 rings above the base and largest snowflake.

Nested using 22.5 degree rotation for best fit.

Dowel holes on base are 0.5" the stacking parts are 0.52"
Only the 3 base parts are glued together.
The 3 star parts are held together with 2 each 1/8" dowels.
The star is mounted on a 3/16" dowel inserted about 1/2" inside the top if the 1/2" center stacking dowel.

Prototype is not finished but could be painted, clear coated, of left as-is.

Beautiful design and execution Dale!! :)
From the "Above" perspective... from the pics it looks like the "branches" have a natural Droop. :)
Very pleasing to the eye.
Well Done!

Any chance you could offer this file in a later version?

I didn't like the top so I added some pieces.
Since the star is mounted on a 3/16" dowel I could add smaller pieces just by making the dowel longer,

Fascinating. This is the second time that's been asked of this. A "later version" of the software can open an "earlier version" file.

I could also post the file in v-carve pro format.

Your tree is beautiful. I would love a copy of your file that would work with V-Carve Pro. Thanks so much for offering. (I had just been been looking at the tree and trying to decide if there was something that would require Aspire, or if it could be recreated, at least somewhat closely, with V-carve.)

These files give you all the parts, but you will need to make them fit your machine and material.
Perhaps you can use them to create your own. :)

I made each "branch" 1/2" smaller than the one below then went back and made another set 1/4" smaller to add more branches - closer together,

These parts were intended for laser cutting but could be cnc cut with a small bit but might also require slight modification such as removing the hole near the center of the leaf span.
I have cut snowflakes with bits as small as 1.5mm.
for small parts I prefer using double sided tap instead of tabs.
The smaller branches might require removing some of the detail, which are not necessary: when assembled you cannot see them anyway.

Thank you for sharing the files for use in V-Carve. I have captured all your notes you have provided here, and will download the files once I am on a computer to do so. Hope to give it try at some point before Christmas. 😏
