An Owl in a log
I wanted to carve another owl so I cut another piece of of the “firewood” I did the last owl in. I like the way it turned out. It has 1 coat of Tied & True on it so far, it seems to have caused some lifting of some of the wood fibers either that or they were laying down and I did not notice them. 1/4 EM roughing followed by 1/32 TBN and .25mm TBN, about 4 hours carve time.

Very nice, Scott! I like the effect of the darker wood on the owl's shoulder.

Re: An Owl in a log
Liking it Scott!!
Especially using the weathered cambium for the spot on the feathers!
Great details!
I Knew I liked that model,
but took me halfway through first coffee, before I realized I BOUGHT that one! Coming on 2 years and haven't carved it yet.
You sent me searching my branches/firewood Scott!
I always like the contrast between weathered and machined:)
NICE!

Oh...Just remembered...I did play with that model, but thought that 2 of them facing opposite directions
would Kinda make a heart shape(?) but with VCP .stl restrictions I gave up as another project needed doing.
Thanks for the kick in the b*** to try again now I've learned more in almost 2 yrs!!

Re: An Owl in a log
Thanks again for the "Kick" Scott!!
First time I've really played with VCP11(and a Lot to get used to),
and even though it's Really rough...It's at least doable! Thanks for getting me to play again(now to find a branch crotch(?)).
MUCH appreciated!!

Re: An Owl in a log
Scott I am happy that I got you going again on this model, I love seeing your work on branches and logs!
Before I even had this one off the machine I knew what I wanted to do with the other 1/2 of this piece.
I want to cut it so the owls body breaks right in to the log with no carving and I want to cut out or remove the area in red so you see right through the piece. I have attached a photo.
Cant wait to see your double !

Re: An Owl in a log
Wow, Scott, you were very lucky that hidden penny in the log didnt break your bit!
Seriously, that is an excellent carving. Looking forward the update you plan as well.

Re: An Owl in a log
Aah Scott.
Confused me for a second until I looked at very first pic at the top,
and see what looks like the other "half"(?),
and saw how straight the back of finished one was(bandsawed??).
I looks a bit thick from the pic.
Are you going to saw again(leaving you with a double live edge blank)?
The first one looks like it was cut on a flat plane?
Are you going to cut the second one the same,
or carve on the "round" like you and Bill were doing a while back?
(I was just thinking you might get more "brown" that way)
Looking forward to seeing your second one as well Scott!

Oh...May try double sized for this piece marked with arrow, lined up with crotch figure(after trimming the split for right alignment). At dawn it looked like a good fit.
Early days yet.

Re: An Owl in a log
Scott, I did cut it in half on the band saw. The first piece that I cut is right about 2”, the remaining is about 2 1/2”. The remaining one has more curve to it so that should reflect more in the model when completed.
I did add the profile of the first one with the moulding tool path, I added a photo that shows the steps of the roughing tool path that I missed removing (? Why did I miss them). Also is a profile shot of the piece, you can see it’s pretty flat which is why I believe the curve of the model is not so visible. The second one should really show it and hopefully I pick up more brown(cambium?).

Aah...I see the curve now:)
2.5" is good. It looked thicker to me.
Thanks for the pics and inspiration Scott:)
