I am really impressed with the Photo-Vcarve feature

Post by legojack »

I try to challenge myself to make a new sign every week. I decided this week to make a sign of John McAfee in light of his apparent suicide this week. This is the first time I've used the photo-vcarve feature. I'm really impressed with it.

Came out great...

Could you please share your settings within the photoVcarve toolpath section? I've just begun experimenting and seeing what settings people used is very helpful.

Start depth - 0.01" (I did this to give myself room to sand it down thinking it might be easy to over-sand, I don't think it was necessary given how hard the Teak was. I had plenty of time to avoid over-sanding.
Max carve depth - 0.05"
Stepover retract - 0.05"

Hatch toolpath

Line spacing: 100.00%
Line angle: 45.0 degrees

Tool: 60 deg vbit
Tool settings(I think the only one that's going to be relevant for such a shallow carve is the feed and plunge rate, but here's all of the settings to be sure):
Pass depth: 0.2"
Final Pass stepover: 0.02"
Clearance Pass stepover: 0.12"
Feed rate: 100 inches/min
Plunge rate: 100 inches/min

Also very important is how it is finished. Details would be gratefully accepted.

True. Sanded with 120grit sandpaper, then 220 grit.

Finished with matte spray lacquer, sanded lightly with 220grit sandpaper and applied a second coat of lacquer. It is perfectly smooth and looks really great in person
