Grandaughter's Wedding Gift

Post by SteveNelson46 »

I've made a few of these before. Some of them turned out better but this one is acceptable I guess. The dark wood is tropical Walnut and the open-grain really showed up after I put a finish on it. The light wood is soft Maple. My cell phone photography isn't the best either. It took a couple of tries to get the 2 layers of wood to the right thickness.

WOW ! That looks awesome! Did you carve this as 1 piece? You said “the two layers of wood” which makes me think you did.
They are going to Love it!

Not at all. Here is a link to the file that will help you get started. You will need Aspire to open it. Of course, you'll have to modify the date and the names. I just used a "Create Shape" in the modeling tools to create both. The heights are critical to match the thicknesses of the boards. When you open the file the notes will explain the board thicknesses. 5/16" for the top board and 7/16" for the bottom. I didn't use any cutouts. Just boundary offsets that cut all the way through the material and then added manual tabs. However, I didn't add any tabs to the middle pieces but you can add some or use double sided tape if you think it's necessary. You could also just stand vigilance at the machine.
