Sign for my favorite restaurant

Post by CarveOne »

I gave this sign to the owner this evening. He knew I was making a gift for him (and his wife) for their restaurant. (but I kept what it actually was a secret)

It sits on a flat surface anywhere he chooses to place it. It compliments the other red oak signs I have made for his restaurant over the past 1-1/2 years since he reopened in this location. His restaurant has done well during these troubled times and I just wanted to do an extra something for them.

The middle font is Colonna MT, one that I haven't noticed in the Aspire list or used before. It is prone to chip-out on coarse wood like red oak, and some repairs were needed before finishing was started. The fajita tray vectors were copied from past fajita tray production I have made for him, and modified to include the new middle and outer text.

He was very happy when he saw what it was. Another "good deed done dirt cheap". :-D

Great job. Can you show us more detail on the stand?

I didn't take a side view photo of it, but maybe I can do it next time I can stop there.

I started with a small 3/4" thick block of red oak scrap and beveled the wide side on my band saw. Then I cut one of the longer edges at an angle that looked like it would stand the tray at an angle that would not easily fall over if accidentally bumped. The block was then glued to the tray with 30 minute epoxy. It seems to work pretty well, and is not noticeable from the front unless deliberately looking for it.

Thanks for the explanation. It looks really clean. Like the fact that it is not visible from the front too.

Always looking for new ideas.

I can see how that font would be delicate with that unsupported end grain,
BUT really nice job for your friend Richard!!
Well done! :)

We will be having lunch there today and I will take a side view photo of it if I can.

At a larger scale on better wood the font might have had less chip-out. Red oak is not always the best choice, but some boards are better than others also. The whole restaurant (former steakhouses) has a red oak theme, so I stuck with it. Fajita trays are usually made of an 11 ply plywood. Had I used a brand new Whiteside #1540 60 degree cutter it may have had better results.

They have the new sign sitting on a partition wall facing the entrance doors. The bar area is behind the sign. It is obvious to someone that is looking for it, but I doubt that many customers would notice it unless they are woodworkers that are looking at the decor of the restaurant. The waiters that know me stopped by our table to thank us for that new addition. They deserve my gifts of appreciation.
