Double Helix Candle Holders

Post by SteveNelson46 »

Last year I was honored by Vectric when they featured a set of my candle holders in one of their newsletters. They stated that I had used a bit of an unconventional approach to the design so I thought they needed a bit of an overhaul. I redesigned them entirely by creating my own components and used 2-rail sweeps along with the wrap gadget in Aspire 10.5. They have 2 twisting spirals (double helix) that are separate from each other so they appear hollow in the middle. They're for my daughter's birthday later this month.

A big thank you to all. I used Zebrawood thinking the contrasting light and dark areas of the grain on the spirals would make an interesting visual effect. It did but, not as striking as anticipated. Using a rough and finish toolpath on the spirals it took about 6 hours for each to cut and about an hour for the base using a moulding toolpath. The base has a larger pocket for the base of the spirals and a smaller 1/2" hole for the post on the end. After gluing I used a small brass screw from the bottom. I don't think they will come apart any time soon.

If anyone would like the files I'd be happy to share them.

Funny, I almost thought that was my shop in the pic, have much the same setup.

Looks great and just about right, you don't want the zebra getting too wild with the grain and looking too busy.
