I am going to be taking a bookmaking course later this year; they suggest trying to bring a bookpress if you've got one. I didn't have one, so I made one!
White Oak finished with Osmo (a finish I would replace my blood with if I could).
I have very happy with the crossbar - I used a 1/16 tapered ball end mill. I was a little disappointed with the carving on the uprights. For that I used a 1/32 ball end mill with a 6% stepover, and I find that the definition is not as good as I had hoped. Carving time was about 2 hours for each side of the upright.
The carvings on the base are contoured - I a little hard to appreciate on the photos, but the pieces are thicker in the middle and taper toward the edges, like the crossbar on the top.
The 1 1/2 screw was made with the Beal threading system. The screw handle was turned on a lathe.

You better chain that thing to your leg or someone in the class is going to walk off with it and that includes the teacher!!!
