“Beer” flights

Post by scotttarnor »

A local bar requested a dozen “beer” flights, I made them out of maple and put their logo on the back so it will be visible when they are hanging up.

Really nice job! Can you explain how you're finishing them in detail please?

Tis the season for Beer Flights as my local microbrew is commissioning me to build some for them but the customer wants round instead of the paddle.

I was at a local coffee shop for the first time a year ago. I saw a paddle with four holes in it on the wall. I asked the barista guy what it was for and he said “we used it as a tasting paddle...back when we were ‘hip’…Now we’re just another coffee-shop in Gastown”.

I enjoyed his honesty.

I made ten of these in the shape of a pizza peel a while back for a local pizza shop. The rings were numbered to correspond to the customer's order and sized for the beer flight glasses. They were finished with 2 coats of shellac and 4 coats of polyurethane for durability.

Sorry I missed your question on finishing these, I used gel stain on the logo carves and WaterLox Original to seal them.

When finishing any project that will be exposed to alcohol or alcoholic beverages I always use urethane. Any finish that is alcohol or lacquer based will leave a cloudy ring when exposed to an alcoholic drink, like beer or hard liquor, that cannot be removed without refinishing.
