Toyota 4 cyl. Engine

Post by garylmast »

I downloaded a Toyota engine meant to 3D print, however I think making it out of wood looked cooler. Definitely was a ton of slices and a lot of double sided cuts. I'm still deciding whether to do the Pan, Head and the rest of the parts. I definitely need to design an engine stand to mount it on. The majority of the wood was poplar, however I did the crankshaft parts out of pine, then stained it to stand out.

It cranks over, but being made out of wood takes a little effort. I doubt it will get very good gas mileage. Size is 16" L x 11" W x 10" H.

Holy cow, that is one amazing project. I am totally impressed!
Thanks for sharing and I do hope we get to see the stand and anything else you add to it.

First: Amazing.
Second: number and thickness of slices?
Third: How do you get the gaps to disappear?
Forth: Carve time?

This is really cool.

Thanks everybody for the compliments. I used a software called Netfabb to do the slicing, with each section being about 30mm. I also used Rhino to combine parts to fit better on sections of wood. The Block had 13 slices, ten being double sided. I also used 6/4 poplar because it had no knots and I found a couple of 10" wide boards. Poplar is also great for craving. I was amazed how well parts fit together with little evidence of a seam. The Crankshaft had 31 double sided components. Pistons I used both the Rotary to round them, then each one as a double sided for top and bottom cuts. Used Rhino for the modeling.
Overall it took about 1-1/2 weeks. I think I could of saved some time but a few of my parts, my dog thought it would be great to grab them, take them outside and use them for a chew toy. Good think I bought extra lumber.

I'm going to design an engine stand and I think I will finish the rest of engine which I will post when I'm done.

Now, I guess the next step is a 12-cylinder Ferrari or Jaguar engine?
