From the picture it looks really nice. Has "she" worn it yet. If so, how did "she" like it?

Re: Dogwood Barrette
Thanks for the compliments. Glad you all like it. This one was especially difficult to get right. I'm really happy with the white oak/walnut combo.
My wife absolutely loves it and it looks really nice worn. Was a Christmas gift hiding at the bottom of her stocking.SteveNelson46 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 31, 2020 6:53 pmFrom the picture it looks really nice. Has "she" worn it yet. If so, how did "she" like it?

Re: Dogwood Barrette
Joe,
You mentioned that it was difficult to get it right. It would be great if you could give us more details as to the steps you used to make that beautiful barrette - especially using the two different woods.

Re: Dogwood Barrette
Absolutely! My first attempt was to keep everything walnut except the white oak flower. So I overlaid a piece of white oak onto the walnut and ran the 3D toolpaths. Came out nice enough but the delicate flower ends ended up with walnut texture at the tips. Ran it again with a slight base Z added to the flower but ran into trouble completely clearing away the white oak off the walnut due to needing to glue the overlay (white oak) piece deeper to match the added base height. I strongly considered gluing the exact profile of the flower onto the walnut and try again but gave up on that idea because I didn't think the flower tips would achieve a good glue bond to the walnut.
Gave up for a bit and when I re-approached it a few months later I said what the heck lets make it real difficult and also try for a white oak border. So I treated the walnut as a "panel" and the border as a "frame" and in the software created a very small rabbet (sorry no pun this time ) in the border to receive the walnut. I pocketed out the back of the white oak to the shape of the base contour and cut the walnut with the same contour and glued them up. These barrettes are 2 sided jobs so I started from the backside running those 3D toolpaths when the glue-up was dry.
Now onto the front again. I ran the pocketing toolpath from the back many times in the software with small changes in the DOC until the underside of the flower could just be seen in the toolpath preview and that became the number I set the walnut "inlay" to. When I flipped the piece to cut the front I cheated Z down manually .004, this being the smallest number I can manually move the axis on my machine. Ran the 3D toolpaths and oh boy when I vacuumed the dust away was I a happy man
It's definitely my wife's favorite out of all her barrettes and I survived another trip down the rabbit hole.
