Walking/Hiking stick instructions

Post by dhellew2 »

WALKING STICKS 2.jpg
Michael Tyler wanted this PDF to encourage folks with CNC rotary but may not know where to start.
The second half of the document "Wrapped carving without a line" is already posted on this forum should you want it by itself.
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=33053&p=240009&hil ... ng#p240009

There is a lot of information in the PDF but it really isn't as difficult as it may seem.
The main thing is to start simple then expand with your experience.

Practice turning round, making spirals, cutting profiles, then wrapped carving.

Feel free to ask questions and I will answer them if I can.

Well Dale....Thank you...I guess it's time I pull the boards off my Arty 56 and turn some walking stick. Like you I have a Legacy CNC and have turned some open candle stick and baseball bats but this project looks to more interesting.
Thank you for talking the time to develop the instructions and I will try to put them to good use.

The lighter sticks are Douglas fir 2x4 purchased at Lowes for a little over $3
There are about 10 straight grained without knots in each unit but often you can often tell by looking at the ends
Sometimes there are a small knot or two but you can often work around them
Most of the straight grained boards are cut on the outside of the tree where there are fewer knots
Even flat-saw grain can be very straight
The sap wood gives them the lighter strip that gives them character
3 sticks can be made from each 8' 2x4
These sticks are light weight but very strong
To preserve the carved detail they are soaked with Minwax wood hardener then coated with Teak/Tung oil mix
Total material cost including ring and insert under $10
Grain should be straight as possible at the core of the stick full length

These are the ones I would look at

Excellent tips for selecting good stock for walking sticks, Dale!

But, heyyyyy...

You’re making me jealous with that greenhouse! Shame on you! ;)

What is Deb feeding those plants anyway? Some kind of alien growth hormone? The greenhouse and contents are fantastic!

Looks like I posted the same photo twice... hmmmm
30"x16'x8" high raised beds filled with dairy cow compost from Oregon [purchased locally]
Drip system water, 3-rows of 1/2" pvc pipe with 1/16" holes at 6" spacing
Water introduced at both ends and center with 1/4" tubing connected to an adjustable distributor
Setup on automatic timer - Rainbird 12 volt 6-station timer
Getting about 3-gallons tomatoes daily - more than two months earlier than without the green house [we are just about even with the northern most tip of Maine]
Planted other crops on both sides of tomatoes and peppers, string beans, cilantro, beet greens, carrots, parsley, lettuce, bok choy, dakon radish, etc. [first dakon radish harvested was 2.5" diameter and 19" long - they grow down 8" then push up the rest above ground - they can get up to 6" diameter and 3' tall - guess I should have taken a photo]

Stay tuned, I will soon be posting what I found to be the easiest way to setup the carved area of the walking stick.
