Rotary - Ice Cream Cone

Post by MiloScott »

Playing with the rotary.
Wood is Ash
Size of small cone – 3” at widest point, x 8” high
Large cone – 4” at widest point, x 10.5” high
Finish is Wipe on Poly
Cut using wrapped spiral vector and continuous rotation.
Total cut time for the large cone is under 45 min, including manual tool changes
Machined on Legacy Maverick 3x5

Fun trying to figure out wrapped vectors. Aim was to get away from the traditional "ink jet printer" style cutting.

Well Done!!
I especially like the color and grain on the 4" one! :)
It's only first sip of coffee...but was wondering how many "Flavors" you could make :) :)

What an amazingly clever idea! They came out great.
Suddenly I want a soft serve cone....go figure.

Thank you very much for sharing this project with us. What with the virus affecting us all and some personal health issues in my family the ice cream cones gave me a big smile. I'm also headed to Culvers.

The more I look at this the more I like it. Im curious, how did you get the nice sharp pointed tip of the cone without the wood breaking??

The sharp point is finished on a Lathe. Haven't been brave enough to slow down the cut and see if it would hang on cutting to a point...

On the CNC

On the Lathe

Cut to a point, carved to blend the spiral flutes, sanded, cut the bottom off

Superb!
Very Nice !
I have a bit of Ash that's drying out but not brave enough to try that yet.
Still not had time to use my 4th axis yet but one day I will and your posts are so helpful on this subject.
Thank you.
