Checkerboard

Post by Beltramidave »

I 'cheaped' out on making a checkerboard as I didn't want to glue up material, so I took a piece of plywood and some pine boards and created this. I masked off the plywood and vcarved the grooves between the squares, then removed some of the mask and stained the appropriate squares. Then I sealed the plywood with shellac and painted the v-grooves black and sealed once again. Applied the pine trim boards and flooded with epoxy. First real epoxy project. Really like the depth that it created.

Excellent job. It looks really nice. A really unique approach with great results. I 'saved' your idea.

Hey, whatever works!

Looks like a nice job to me and it will work as a checkers board.

As I'm about to embark on a new chessboard over on our cheaper cousin forum board.(VCP)
This to me is all relevant.
Can I ask how large did you make the squares and how wide are the resin fillets
It looks beautiful BTW

WOW Dave, your technique worked out great. It looks really impressive.

Thank you so much for sharing your file for everyone to use. During this strange time where many people are isolated this will be a very welcome project to not only keep the maker busy, but also their family or friends too once it's complete.

We are blessed to have a community of users like you.

Have a great day.

Thank you for all the comments, this was a fun project and I am glad to share it. Here is the file for the trim boards. I should have included it earlier. Nothing fancy. I used pine 1x6 boards for these and made them intentionally long to allow for trimming. As always, make sure to check toolpaths and set for your machine.

Hi Dave,
Can I enquire a little more on the Epoxy Resin process and some links to the materials you used?
How deep is your Epoxy?
This is where I'm at at the moment and I'll be using your chequered squares inlaid into this surround.
to which I'll flood with the resin.
Also, can you give me some info about finishing the resin (or did you just leave it)
Chessboard Top.PNG
I wish to make this into a storage box for the pieces, lots of work ahead.
Thank you for any help offered
Regards

BIgC - Here is a link to the product I used purchased from Menards. https://www.menards.com/main/paint/inte ... c-7966.htm

Best to read the directions, but with this particular resin, I believe that about 1/8" is the recommended depth per layer. There are other 'deep pour' resins out there. I poured one thickness on my board. Very critical to have piece level before you start and good idea to have some kind of a cover that you can put over the piece to keep dust off after the pour. Seal the wood before pouring to help with air bubbles created from epoxy seeping into the wood pores.

I put blue painters tape on the bottom edge of the trim to keep off most of the drips. Pull the tape off carefully after a couple of hours. I also set mine on a 5 gallon bucket so that I could get at the bottom edges easier. If any drips form on the bottom edge, you can file them off after it has cured for a couple of days

Other than that, pour material over piece, starting in center, and use a squeegee or foam brush to move it around. They say you can use a notched plastic trowel to keep a more uniform depth on larger pieces. I just used a foam brush. Then as air bubbles appear, use a electric heat gun or small propane torch and sweep over to pop them, checking back once in a while. Then let sit and do not disturb it for however long the directions say.

Good luck and be sure to post the finished pictures.
