Barley Twist Display Table

Post by SteveNelson46 »

This is the "In The Labs" display table that Vectric and David offered as a free project. I have to admit that it was a challenge to get the feeds and speeds right on the barley twist post. I also made a few changes. The top has a rope twist around the perimeter and a three arm support for mounting on the post. It's just mounted with screws so it can expand and contract with moisture changes. The post still has the swept taper to the center and has an extra two-rail sweep at the top and bottom of the twists to sort of give it a more finished look. The top and base were also increased in diameter by about an inch and a half.

This was a lot of fun to make and I learned a few things along the way. For one, the rope border was created with the Extrude and Weave tool instead of a two-rail sweep. A much more efficient process with better results.

Made entirely of Walnut and finished with two coats of Mohawk spray on sanding sealer and four coats of Mohawk semi-gloss lacquer.

Very nice. That was certainly worth all your time and effort. I hope you were able to do all your learning on the preview, and not on that beautiful walnut....

Thanks Michael and gkas. Actually, I thought all of the problems were worked out so I mounted the walnut blank for the post and started the carve. About an hour into the carve I noticed some bit chatter. Went back to the computer and, sure enough, I had forgotten to change the DOC and the feed after making other changes. OUCH! Oh well, live and learn. Walnut that size isn't cheap either.

Sounds like an expensive "Lesson"...but those are the ones you remember best.

The top and base are top notch work Steve.....but it's the LEG that Really makes that Exquisite Piece!! :D
Congrats on a Piece that deserves to be in one of Fine Woodworking "Design Books"!! :)

Steve Nelson,

I noticed the apparent addition under the top to the original file, was this your mod and if so would you mind sharing that? I am going to attempt this in the next week or so and really like that add-on.

Sure! It's just a merged 2-rail sweep. Here is a link to the project. I have the feeds and speeds reduced to a minimum so it will take awhile to carve.

Thank you Steve, I plan on cutting this sometime before spring and will post pics when done. Things get done slowly around here....

At least my Wall of Shame hasn't grown at it's original breakneck pace.
Wish there was an "Inspiration" button.....since Dr cut back my caffeine, projects that almost come together themselves are becoming rarer:)
Back to surfacing some more branch backs.....maybe I'll luck out and KNOW what one wants to be :)

Thanks Phil.

In my original message I said that I had previously used a 2-rail sweep on the rope perimeter of the top. That is incorrect. I was using the "Copy Along Vectors" tool. Although it worked pretty good, the "Extrude and Weave" tool works much better.
