A while ago Marsha was finishing her Santa needlepoint. It needed a custom frame.
This is her original design concept (Postit )
We sat down and designed it in Aspire. We contemplated several designs of lettering and frame design. I've done a lot of photography framing, but no needlepoint. Hello YouTube. We gathered all the materials, and decided on the required frame depth and dado depth on the back.
I made the frame blank from a single glue-up of Maple. I did not want to mill the holly as separate parts. The center section has been saved for other projects. The first finish pass is a 1/4" tapered ball nose. The finish came out nice.
The second finish is done with a 1/16" Tapered Ball nose. I did a 'Modified Rest Machining'. I drew vectors around the holly and lettering. The vectors are about 1/4" to 1/2" away from the selected areas to make sanding out the lines less noticeable.
The finished frame was finished with Cabernet Stain (that in itself is a separate story), then a few coats of Satin finish. Framed with Plexiglass and paper backing. All archival.
A fun and interesting project.

When two talented people combine their skills, the result is usually something special...as is this piece!
Very well done. Thanks for the details of the project as they are fun to “follow along”
